Hi I was diagnosed with HFA earlier this year I’m 44. I have a big problem with paranoia and not sure how best to treat it?? I have spoken with a psychiatrist and they want me to take an antipsychotic which I don’t want to so was wondering if anyone can relate? And have any advice?

  • Depends if it's psychosis causing your paranoia or anxiety and stress. Have you thought about trying CBD ?. BTW. I'm 46. Been diagnosed for 6 yrs but got to see my medical files and I had a childhood diagnosis too that was kept from me. I tried self medicating by smoking weed. Got me in a mess. CBD vape ciggy thing got me back off of it and made my mental health a whole lot better. 👍

I have tried CBD and it did help but it’s expensive and I’m not working at the moment so can’t afford it. I don’t think it’s psychosis as I have had that in the past so no the warning signs. I think it’s due to high anxiety levels. I have to stay away from weed as that makes me really paranoid

high anxiety levels can get mistaken for physcosis. After finding that weed made things worse, I used CBD but also threw myself into my kayaking Hobie. Excercise and piece and quiet was what actually sorted me out. Ive circumnavigated the Canary Islands, the coast of Scotland and the coastline of Norway in my travels. Guess I'm a bit like Forrest gump. Lol. Beta blocker tablets is another medical way to beat anxiety attacks. Have you tried them. ? Propranolol is what I had.

I'm asthmatic too. Don't think the propranolol was a very strong dose. Kayaking is awesome isn't it. I prefer sea but live near the river Dart too so run that aswell. Itching to take my delphin down it 👍

there's quite a difference between the upper and the loop. Great fun though. My dream date on that river would be a big blow up unicorn 😆

  • 47 here and diagnosed earlier in the year. May I ask why you don't want to take the medication? I don't have issues with paranoia, generally speaking*, so I'm trying to get a better understanding of your reasoning (plus it helps me understand something better when I explain it to someone else, so maybe there will be additional benefits?).
*I do tend to get a bit paranoid when abusing weed, but if I limit my intake to a few times a week then I no issues.

I don’t want to take the medication as I have taken them in the past I was on Olanzapine for 3yrs and it was horrible the side effects were horrendous and when I decided to stop the withdrawal was really difficult and I’m still suffering from withdrawal. I do still take Prozac but it does not help much.

That's fair. I'm on antidepressants and while the one I take now is good the first one they gave me made me all jittery. Did not like that at all.

I'm taking Valdoxan, it's got some melatonin so it prepares my brain for sleep (I take it about an hour before bed). Been on it for a few years now.

you need to listen to your doctor. Depending on what type of paranoia you have, there is no treatment other than medication that will work.
You mention marijuana use and that’s a no no for sure if you have paranoia. If your medications give you terrible side effects tell them and try something else. There are over a dozen medications that can treat this sort of thing.
