Marcia Lee Mansell well thanks but....I sure dont feel successfu right now...no

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann in my case in raising my grandson, and now his caregiver now that he is an adult, I often think that maybe I should have done something differently, and in some cases I know I should have done something differently...my grandson and I are on this journey together, and with so few, if any, resources available, the journey can be rocky.....please, Marcia, never feel that any of what happens negatively in your journey with Stephen is your fault, there is no fault, rather enjoy the sucesses, even though sometimes those successes can be small, and please remember that Autism is never caused by bad parenting!

Adam Sandler did something awesome for 10-year-old Santino Stagliano. The actor wore one of the dragon shirts that Santino designs to raise awareness about autism. Thank you Santino and Adam for helping spread autism awareness!Read:http://www.fox5ny.com/news/11681434-story

Is it me, or does the world appear to revolve around alcohol, loud music and partying? It appears that most so-called "interesting" or "normal" people like those things.

David Merrill Gill I'm big on partying. Give me my Led Zeppelin any day.

Adrian Thomas Ha! So I'm a 70 years old married male former county surveyors society autie-aspie activist, advocate, coach and counsellor - with a wife, daughter and 2 grandchildren - written and published five amazon bestsellers and have a voice on the AOL Huffington Post and on CNNiReport and an invite from CBS to have a voice with them too - am compiling a course for Udemy and ebook for Clickbank - dont drink alcohol, cant stand loud rock music and hate parties

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann It does seem as if the world does appear to revolve around alcohol, loud music, and partying, and many people do like that combination, a lot of parties do involve alcohol and loud music. I think if you had indulged in this combination on a regular basis you probably would not have been able to think straight and do the work you have been able to do.

Adrian Thomas Yes Kathryn Mansell-Hamann - you are probably right and thanks for your diplomacy - you are amazing

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann thank you, and thank you for being part of our group.

Adrian Thomas ❤ you epitomise unconditional love and unconditional forgiveness god will be smiling right now

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann thank you

I am angry and sad. Just got off stage from today's matinee and yes, something happened. Someone brought their autistic child to the theater. That being said- this post won't go the way you think it will. You think I will admonish that mother for bringing a child who yelped during a quiet moment in the show. You think I will herald an audience that yelled at this mother for bringing their child to the theater. You think that I will have sympathy for my own company whose performances were disturbed from a foreign sound coming from in front of them. No. Instead, I ask you- when did we as theater people, performers and audience members become so concerned with our own experience that we lose compassion for others? The theater to me has always been a way to examine/dissect the human experience and present it back to ourselves. Today, something very real was happening in the seats and, yes, it interrupted the fantasy that was supposed to be this matinee but ultimately theater is created to bring people together, not just for entertainment, but to enhance our lives when we walk out the door again. It so happened that during "the whipping scene", a rather intense moment in the second act, a child was heard yelping in the audience. It sounded like terror. Not more than one week earlier, during the same scene, a young girl in the front row- seemingly not autistic screamed and cried loudly and no one said anything then. How is this any different? His voice pierced the theater. The audience started to rally against the mother and her child to be removed. I heard murmurs of "why would you bring a child like that to the theater?". This is wrong. Plainly wrong.Because what you didn't see was a mother desperately trying to do just that. But her son was not compliant. What they didn't see was a mother desperately pleading with her child as he gripped the railing refusing- yelping more out of defiance. I could not look away. I wanted to scream and stop the show and say- "EVERYONE RELAX. SHE IS TRYING. CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT SHE IS TRYING???!!!!" I will gladly do the entire performance over again. Refund any ticket because-For her to bring her child to the theater is brave. You don't know what her life is like. Perhaps, they have great days where he can sit still and not make much noise because this is a rare occurrence. Perhaps she chooses to no longer live in fear, and refuses to compromise the experience of her child. Maybe she scouted the aisle seat for a very popular show in case such an episode would occur. She paid the same price to see the show as you did for her family. Her plan, as was yours, was to have an enjoyable afternoon at the theater and slowly her worst fears came true. I leave you with this- Shows that have special performances for autistic audiences should be commended for their efforts to make theater inclusive for all audiences. I believe like Joseph Papp that theater is created for all people. I stand by that and also for once, I am in a show that is completely FAMILY FRIENDLY. The King and I on Broadway is just that- FAMILY FRIENDLY- and that means entire families- with disabilities or not. Not only for special performances but for all performances. A night at the theater is special on any night you get to go. And no, I don't care how much you spent on the tickets.======EDIT: I could have never anticipated the response I received from this FB post. There is an incredible need in this world for compassionate and understanding, especially in the Autism community. Please follow me on Twitter www.twitter.com/kelvinmoonloh or follow me Kelvin Moon Loh Page to contact or info about inclusive performances!

Date Sunday, 11 October 2015Time 12:52:27Loving this Autism Neurotribes book by the Australian, Steve Silberman -

David Merrill Gill Forget it, I am not reading this one!

Adrian Thomas Why's that David Merrill Gill? I'm only on chapter 2 - and I'm enjoying it

David Merrill Gill Simply put, I don't agree with the movement, and I think it's wasting its time.

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann please enlighten me as to the specific reason or reasons you do not agree with the movement referred to in your comment David Merrill Gill, we are here to share information, please be specific in stating reasons for liking or not liking something, please feel free to share anything you think might help someone in our group, ...administrator..

David Merrill Gill Because I have had plenty of setbacks in endeavoring to break away from my senior parents, for another thing, Autistics are nuts to think they will take over positions of power on the globe, including and especially the Oval Office!

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann Thank you for sharing. Based on your experience and observations I will be reading the above mentioned book, and of course I will have my own opinion of this book. However, this group is for people who want to learn about Asperger's Syndrome and to give support to those who have Asperger's Syndrome, and to support their families and friends and caregivers. Since you have had plenty of setbacks in endeavoring to break away from your senior parents and might like some suggestions on how you might be able to accomplish this successfully you might think about asking if anyone has been able to do this successfully. Wording in a comment on this page is always important, to refer to anyone as "nuts' is inappropriate, you are entitled to your opinion, but please do not use offensive words.

David Merrill Gill Frankly, I wouldn't deserve it, with the hell I have been to the ASD Individuals community.

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann Wouldn't deserve what?, please do not be vague in your comments.

David Merrill Gill Wouldn't be deserving of the help!

David Merrill Gill Don't chew me out for being vague.

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann Everyone deserves help, look, I am not chewing you out, just letting you know what is and is not appropriate. How will you know if you are not informed?

David Merrill Gill Because I've been chastised for too long about what is appropriate and what is not. Why don't I just leave this group and we'll discuss this in private?

Kathryn Mansell-Hamann I think you might like some of the posts on this page, so I invite you to stay....if you would like to pm me that would be ok, too. I do understand the frustration you seem to be having. I know that always, or it may seem like it is always, being told that you are behaving , or talking, inappropriately, can be very, very frustrating.

This has been pondered for days now: should I write this post and HOW should I write this post? Over the weekend we received a complaint about one of our delievery drivers. The customer wasn't simply complaining, he was ranting and foul. He informed us our driver was an idiot and strung out on drugs and was FURIOUS!It was calmly explained to him, no, this driver is not on drugs....nor does he drink....he is autistic and has a slight speech impediment. The customer called the phone person a liar, had a few more choice words for her and hung up.When the driver returned, he came into my office a little shaken because the customer was angry (he had mixed up the pouch of food but quickly retrieved the correct order from his car.Mistakes are made all the time in the course of a business life, and when we make them we do our very best to correct the problem immediately. )...that didn't satisfy this man....he berated him and then called him a name I won't even elude to here.It isn't the first time I've had a comment about this employee, but normally, as soon as I explain, they are always VERY understanding that the mannerisms had a reason. This driver has worked for us for two years. He is a seriously accomplished University student, has an amazingly inquisitive personality, a wicked sense of humor and one helluva work ethic! You would think, in the year 2015 the majority of the population would have learned or at least heard about autism. I understand that there is a large portion of our population that is content to remain uninformed and uneducated, but that doesn't give them to right to take that ignorance and turn it into a foul mouthed rant on two of my employees! Therefore, we have fired this customer. That address, that name and phone number will be tagged with a DO NOT DELIVER DO NOT ACCEPT ORDER message. ...... And won't that customer be surprised later in life to learn that his "idiot strung out" delivery driver long ago turned out to be the physicist, microbiologist or chemical engineer who could quite possibly make a discovery that will save his sorry *** someday.Just sayin'.Thank you for allowing my own little rant here.

I have mixed feelings around the use of HF/LF labels. My son is non-verbal and requires a lot of support in many daily activities, yet I don't consider him to be LF. If anything, I'd say he's HF because he's remarkably independent IN SPITE OF his significant challenges. Thoughts?

user

Yes, I am sure it would be beneficial for drivers, I think it would also be beneficial for non drivers.
